On these long winter days we've been having, it's nice to have a little something in the house to remind you that Spring is coming.
I love the fragrance of paperwhite narcissus, so I started a few bulbs. They are beautifully flowering by my kitchen sink!
You can purchase a kit that comes with everything you need, or you can go to the nursery, get some seed starting soil and bulbs. Either way it's so easy! You'll wonder why you never did it before.
Start by filling a pot to about 1-1/2 to 2 inches from the top. Place the bulbs, sprouts side up, and
cover all but the very tip. Let a little bit peek out.
Put them in a dark place for a week or two. As they start to sprout leaves, move them to a sunny window, but not direct sun. Turn them often. They will reach towards the sun.
I planted these on December 7th.
The first blooms came out a couple days before New Year's Eve.
And here they are today, adorning my kitchen counter and fill the air with fragrance.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry yours didn't make it. I hope you are more successful next time!! When they die back put the bulbs outside in the ground. They will likely grow again. Forcing them indoors does take a lot of their energy though. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteThese are so pretty! I did this a few years ago when I lived in a cold climate. It made me feel cheerful to see the delicate blooms inside the house when there was snow on the ground outside.
