Planning and Planting for a Fall Harvest

I am loving my garden. This summer I grew chard, tomatoes, squash, peas, and more. As it starts to wind down I've enjoyed creating dishes from the last of the summer garden, like this garden fresh omelet!

And now I'm planning for a fall harvest. Yes, you can plant now for harvesting late fall.

Not all plants produce well in colder weather, but some actually thrive. Here are some of the plants that grow well for fall harvest:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbages
  • Onions
  • Radish (especially watermelon radish)
  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Turnips
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Lettuce and other greens
  • Kohlrabi
What you grow will depend on you zone - check your hardiness zone here.

My space is pretty small - 7 feet by 3 feet. And I'm in zone 8 - So I opted for radishes (regular, watermelon and black), carrots (2 kinds), leeks, green onion, walla walla onion and red onion. I put in three kinds of lettuce, spinach, chard, and beets. The green beans are still going strong from summer so I left those. There are also four pepper plants in the bed that are still producing, so I left those too.

I started by planning my bed. I use the square-foot gardening method (A method that marks off 12 inch squares in the garden beds and they are used as a guide for planting).

In my garden journal I drew the bed then put in each square what I wanted to plant based on how many each square could hold. I had to eliminate a few items because there simply was not enough room.

Preparing the beds are next. The day before I raked out any debris that was left from the previous plants and added a little fertilizer to the soil. The fertilizer was raked in and then gently watered. And then I planted.

Now I wait for a month or two. Some things will be ready to harvest in 30 days, some closer to 90 - but I'm looking forward to more freshness to come. I'll keep you posted!

But until then I'll just sit in my rocker and wait.
