This 11th day of Yuletide celebrates Valkyries and warriors. Armed with a spear, these ladies served Odin and rode on horseback into battle. She is tasked with choosing worthy warriors from the battlefields to join the gods in the afterlife.
The idea of how angels might look may have originated in the versions of Valkyries. But Valkyries are goddesses, daughters of Odin.
The Yuletide is a season of hospitality, sharing, and reflecting on virtues. Tonight the virtue of self-reliance is the topic.
A traditional meal is himmel und erde, a combination of apples and mashed potatoes, typically served with pork or bacon. The words himmel und erde mean heaven and hearth.
So light a fire, cook up some heaven and earth and reflect on self-reliance and community.
